Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei assured Kenyans that deals between Kenya and the United States remain secure. This assurance came despite an imminent change in leadership at the White House.
Signed Deals During May 2024 US State Visit
In May 2024, President William Ruto signed several deals with both the US government and private sector. These agreements cover various sectors, including health and defense.
Continuity of Agreements
The news of President Joe Biden not seeking reelection will not affect the implementation of these deals. Sing’oei emphasized that the agreements are with the US government and private sector, not tied to any specific officeholder.
“None. Deals were signed with the government of the United States and the private sector,” said Sing’oei. “Government exists in perpetuity no matter the holder of a specific office.”
Deals Worth Ksh52 Billion
During his visit, Ruto secured deals worth Ksh52 billion. These commitments from US State Departments and agencies aim to support various development projects. Key areas include:
- Advancement of democracy
- Human rights
- Governance
- Health partnerships
The US government also pledged significant funds for Ruto’s climate change agenda. The Pentagon promised 11 military choppers and funding for the Kenya Police Training Base in Kiganjo.
According to Sing’oei, these commitments will be honored regardless of the future US President’s policies. The relationship between Ruto and Vice President Kamala Harris also bolsters confidence. Harris, endorsed by Biden for the Democratic Party ticket, has a cordial relationship with Ruto. They participated together in a US-Kenya Business Forum hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce.
