The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summoned Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Tuesday. He is to appear at the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road in Nairobi on Wednesday, July 24, at 9 am.
Details of the Summons
The summons require Owino to provide information on allegations of police incitement and money laundering.
“I request you, Babu Owino, to report to me at the DCI headquarters, Nairobi County Police Station on July 24 at 09:00 hours and furnish me with full information concerning the case,” read part of the summon letter.
“I do believe you, Babu Owino, might have been involved or have information which can assist me in my investigations.”
Owino’s Reaction
Owino expressed displeasure at the summons on his social media.
“I have been summoned by the DCI tomorrow to help them investigate myself, total madness,” he commented.
He was warned of potential prosecution if he failed to comply.
“Failure to comply with the above requirement renders you liable for prosecution,” the letter read.
Context of the Summons
This summons comes amidst Owino’s vocal opposition to President William Ruto’s administration. On Monday, July 22, he criticized the President in Homa Bay County. He expressed support for protesting youths and accused the state of negligence regarding recent protest deaths.
“To the Gen Zs of this country, we are proud, we love what you are doing and we know the difference between President William Ruto and the Gen Zs,” Babu Owino stated.
“Tomorrow we have a date with destiny and for something good to happen, something must break,” he remarked.
