Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba urged young Kenyans to push for a new finance bill. Speaking on Monday, she highlighted the importance of funding key institutions like the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
In a media interview, Wamuchomba explained the necessity of a new bill. This bill would ensure funds to sustain crucial institutions. She emphasized the need for a structure if MPs get recalled or the president resigns.
Key Points
“If Gen Zs want change, they must ensure Parliament raises funds for the IEBC,” she stated. “They should also prioritize amending the withdrawn finance bill to fund the IEBC.”
The MP noted that reconstituting the IEBC would enable any constituency to recall MPs and elect new ones properly. This approach prevents leaderless constituencies.
Wamuchomba stressed the importance of following proper procedures. “Recalling and electing new leaders the right way saves us from anarchy,” she said.
On June 26, President William Ruto withdrew the controversial Finance Bill 2024. This decision came after nationwide protests organized by the youth. Protestors demanded a withdrawal, not just amendments.
Support for Protests
During the interview, Wamuchomba supported the ongoing protests. She urged the government to publish the names of those missing during the protests. “This will ease the search process,” she noted.
Transparency and Accountability
She also requested the government disclose the number of detained young Kenyans. She called on human rights groups, like the Kenya Red Cross and the Law Society of Kenya, to ensure transparency.
Wamuchomba recounted the June 25 demonstrations in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). Protesters breached Parliament security, resulting in multiple deaths. “It was a sad scene,” she said, describing the emotional impact on parents witnessing the event.
